Safety Inspections - Elevator and Escalator Safety Inspections - Frequently Asked Questions

 
1. Why don’t I have a current elevator certificate?
Several reasons may cause this situation;
1) Unit is not in compliance and needs violations corrected and a re-inspection performed,
2) Unit is due for an Annual Inspection but has not yet received one,
3) Certificate has not yet been generated or has been generated and is not being sent to the proper party.
 
2.  What can be done to get a valid Elevator Certificate?
  1. Correct violations and make an Inspection Request,
  2. Request an Annual Inspection,
  3. Provide an updated Registration Form
 
3.  Is there an Inspection Fee?
Annual Inspections are provided by law with no fee. Re-inspections, by law, incur a fee of $250 for up to 4 hours and $500 for up to 8 hours.
 
4.  Can I avoid the fee?

Yes, by ensuring your elevator is properly maintained, tested annually by its Anniversary Date and records kept, the need for re-inspection would become unnecessary and the fee avoided.

 
5.  Can I get the Inspection and Test Dates (ANNIVERSARY DATE) changed?

Yes, by completing an Anniversary Change request.

 
6.  How do I get a NEW unit inspected?
Complete a Registration Form, review the Inspection Policy and make an Inspection Request.
 
7.  Can I get a code exception?
Yes, by completing a Code Exception Request.
