Employer FAQ's

Will "Apprenticeship & Training" help pay the salaries of my Apprentices?
No. You pay Apprentices just as you pay your employees now.

 

If not, then why should I bother with "Apprenticeship & Training"?
Four decades of studies have proven that participating in Maryland’s Apprenticeship & Training Program will:
    1. significantly increase worker productivity,
    2. decrease absenteeism and workplace accidents, and
    3. greatly improve employee retention rates, thereby increasing your profit margin.

 

Isn’t "Apprenticeship & Training" just another chance for the Government to tell me how to run my business?

No. No one will dictate how you run your business. We will make beneficial suggestions that will help you improve your training program. Together, you and Maryland’s "Apprenticeship & Training" Program will reach a consensus of program operations (called "Program Standards of Apprenticeship") that will serve as a work template for you and your apprentices.

How can I become a registered Apprentice in Maryland’s "Apprenticeship & Training" Program?
First and foremost, Apprenticeships are jobs. To get started in Maryland’s Apprenticeship & Training Program, an employer that is participating in Maryland’s Apprenticeship & Training Program must first hire you. Contact the Maryland Apprenticeship & Training Program to obtain a listing of participating employers in your area.

 

Will being an Apprentice help me earn more money?
Yes. Apprentices are guaranteed periodic pay increases throughout their Apprenticeships, provided they successfully complete program requirements. Studies have proven that Journeyworkers that have graduated from Apprenticeship Programs typically earn significantly more money than do workers who have not participated in an Apprenticeship & Training Program.

 

What happens to me if I successfully complete an Apprenticeship?

A worker who completes an Apprenticeship becomes a State-certified Journeyworker in their skilled trade and receives a diploma called a "Certificate of Completion" that is recognized nationwide. Journeyworkers can reasonably expect to find jobs more quickly, and at higher rates of pay, than other trade workers that have not achieved Journeyworker status.
