Examination Eligibility and Application Process

ENGINEER - IN - TRAINING EXAMINATION (Fundamentals)
aka "FE" or "EIT"

Requirements:
An applicant may qualify to take the Fundamentals of Engineering (EIT) examination if the applicant: is in the process of completing a four year curriculum in engineering at a college or university within the six months after the next scheduled administration of the Fundamentals of Engineering Examination, and evidence of such is provided by the college or university; or has been graduated from a college or university on completion of a four year curriculum in engineering or its equivalent, that the Board approves.

At its November 19, 2004 meeting, the State Board for Professional Engineers voted to endorse engineering programs currently recognized under the Washington Accord as approved engineering programs under Section 14-305(b), Business Occupations and Professions Article, Annotated Code of Maryland. As a result, all applicants seeking to take October 2005 and subsequent licensing examinations may take advantage of this new opportunity, provided that they comply with other requirements set forth in the licensing statute governing professional engineers. You are encouraged to consult the applicable law and regulations that can be found on the Board's website.

First-time applicants may obtain an application from Online Forms Page or by contacting the Board at 410-230-6010 or peeitexam@dllr.state.md.us. The filing deadline for first-time applicants for the Engineer-in-Training Examination is 60 days prior to the examination date. First-time applicants must have an original transcript sent directly from the school to the State Board and it must be received by the State Board by the 60 day deadline. If you have a foreign degree or are applying before graduation, please see instructions in the application. The application, fee, transcript(s), and any other supporting documentation must be received by the State Board by the stated deadline. Postmarks are not acceptable.

Instructions and the special number will be sent to you via regular mail or you can contact us at 410-230-6010 or peeitexam@dllr.state.md.us. The deadline to file for re-examination is 60 days prior to the examination date.

Approved candidates will be notified of their eligibility and sent admittance authorization and general information at least 2 weeks prior to the examination. The names of approved candidates will be posted on our website sometime after the filing deadline.

ELIGIBLE CANDIDATES FOR FUNDAMENTALS OF ENGINEERING EXAMINATION

The Fundamentals of Engineering Reference Handbook is available on-line from NCEES at no cost. A copy of the Handbook will be provided for use during the examination on the day of the examination. Candidates may not bring a copy of the Handbook to the examination. NCESS can be reached at their website.

Examination Application/Fee - Fundamentals of Engineering (EIT)
Candidates who are not approved for the exam will receive a partial refund of the test service fee and the exam booklet/ scoring costs. The application fee is non-refundable. Approved candidates may withdraw and receive the same partial refund if the request to withdraw is received in a timely manner. Send requests to withdraw to peeitexam@dllr.state.md.us.

SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES LIST – most recent examination
The names of successful candidates will be posted approximately 120 days after the date of examination.

EIT Certificate:
Instructions explaining how to file online for an EIT certificate will be enclosed with the successful candidate's results letter. A certificate is not a license and does not have to be renewed.

Americans with Disabilities Act
The Maryland Board for Professional Engineers complies with the American with Disabilities Act in accommodating examination candidates with special needs. Requests for special testing accommodations must be reviewed and approved by NCEES (not the Board) and must be received by NCEES no later than 60 days prior to the exam date. The NCEES document "Guidelines for Requesting Religious and ADA Accommodations" explains the requirements and procedures for applying for special accommodations. To download a copy of the guidelines, go online to the NCEES website, and click on the heading, "Exam", to find the guidelines. If you request special testing accommodations, send the original documents to NCEES and send a courtesy copy to the Exam Coordinator, Maryland Board for Professional Engineers, 500 N. Calvert Street, Room 308, Baltimore, MD 21202. NCEES will notify the Board of the special accommodations they approve and the Board will notify the candidate.

PROFESSIONAL ENGINEER EXAMINATION (Principles and Practices)
aka "PE" or "P&P"

Requirements:
The National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) examination is given by the Maryland Board twice a year in April and October. Candidates will be examined in the discipline in which education and/or experience were gained. To view the list of disciplines, click here NCEES Schedule. Please note that Maryland does not license PE's by discipline. The Board will only confirm what discipline a licensed PE tested for in the State.

TO QUALIFY
An applicant may qualify for the Professional Engineers Examination by meeting the educational and/or experience requirements specified in one of the following subsections of the Professional Engineers law:

Subsection 14-305(b) - EAC/ABET APPROVED OPTION
Has graduated from a college or university on completion of at least a four year curriculum in engineering, or its equivalent, that the Board approves, and has at least four years of work experience in engineering that is satisfactory to the Board and that indicates to the Board that the applicant is competent to practice engineering, and has passed an eight hour written examination in the fundamentals of engineering given by the Board; 

Programs currently recognized under the Washington Accord are accepted as approved engineering programs.

OR

Subsection 14-305(c) - NON EAC/ABET APPROVED OR FOREIGN CURRICULUM OPTION
Has been graduated from a college or university on completion of at least a four year curriculum in engineering, or its equivalent, that the Board has not approved, and has at least eight years of work experience in engineering that is satisfactory to the Board and that indicates to the Board that the applicant is competent to practice engineering, and has passed an eight hour written examination in the fundamentals of engineering given by the Board;

OR

Subsection 14-305(d) - EXPERIENCE OPTION
Has at least 12 years of work experience in engineering that is satisfactory to the Board, during at least five years of which the applicant has been in responsible charge, if the collective experience indicates to the Board that the applicant may be competent to practice engineering. "Responsible charge" means that the individual has direct control and personal supervision of engineering that requires initiative, professional skill, and independent judgment.

An applicant may substitute a complete scholastic year of at least 30 credit hours in a college or university of engineering approved by the Board for each of these years of experience, upon demonstrating grades satisfactory to the Board.

If the applicant has successfully completed one or more years of a college or university curriculum in engineering that has not been approved by the Board (i.e. not accredited by EAC/ABET) the Board may allow, for each of those years, a credit of up to six months towards the experience requirements.

If an applicant has completed graduate study in engineering that is satisfactory to the Board, the Board may allow up to 1 year credit toward the experience requirement.

Completed applications will be submitted to the Board for review. When reviewed, the applicant will be notified in writing if he or she is approved to sit for examination.

PE LICENSE:
Instructions explaining how to file online for a PE license will be enclosed with the successful candidate's results letter. Licenses expire two years from the date of issuance.
