Office of the Commissioner of Financial Regulation

Affiliated Insurance Producer - Originator

If you are an insurance producer and intend to conduct mortgage lending business in the State of Maryland, you may require a license from the Commissioner of Financial Regulation.

Effective May 11, 2009 the Commissioner of Financial Regulation uses the Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System (NMLS) to manage Affiliated Insurance Producer-Mortgage Loan Originator licensees and applicants.

The NMLS was developed by the Conference of State Bank Supervisors and the American Association of Residential Mortgage Regulators. The goal of the NMLS is to streamline and improve the licensing process for companies, branches, and individuals that hold licenses in multiple states.

Pre-Licensure Courses - Note that effective July 1, 2009, the pre-licensing requirement has been reduced from 40 hours to 20 hours and applies to all loan originators regardless of experience. Maryland is working to approve 20 hour providers as quickly as possible. See Pre-Licensure Education Providers for the current list. You may also contact the other providers on the MHEC website to determine if that provider offers a 20 hour course alternative. The previously approved 40 hour program may also be used to satisfy this requirement.
